Professional Experience.


Michael D. Collins, Ph.D., is Interim Director and an Associate Professor in the School of Resort & Hospitality Management, Lutgert College of Business, Florida Gulf Coast University. Prior to his current appointment, Dr. Collins served as Chair of the Hospitality Management Department at the University of San Francisco from 2013 - 2017 and on the Hospitality and Resort Tourism Management faculty in the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration at Coastal Carolina University from 2005 - 2013. Michael has delivered workshops on a wide range of topics, including goal setting, time management, resume writing, interviewing skills, customer service, effective business presentations, and revenue optimization, for students and industry professionals in the United States as well as in Latin America.


Dr. Collins is the author of Successful Hotel, Lodging & Resort Management: Delivering the Guest Experience and Make It Count! Getting the Most from a Hospitality Internship, published by Kendall Hunt of Dubuque, Iowa.

Prior to embarking on a career in higher education, Dr. Collins spent twenty-five years in the hotel industry managing upscale, full-service hotels and resorts throughout the United States. Michael began his hotel industry career in entry-level guest service positions while attending college. Upon graduation from Michigan State University in 1982, with a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities, Collins completed Marriott’s Individual Development management training program and eventually rose to the position of General Manager with Pickett Suite Hotels (doing business today as Doubletree by Hilton). During his hotel industry career, Collins managed hotels for Hyatt Hotels Corporation in suburban Atlanta, San Francisco, and Chicago, as well as hotels and resorts for Wyndham International in Salt Lake City, Palm Springs, West Hollywood, and Myrtle Beach. He also served as Vice President and General Manager for the Resort at Glade Springs located in Daniels, West Virginia. In 2001, Michael earned a Master of Science in Strategic Leadership from the University of Charleston in Beckley, West Virginia (formerly Mountain State University) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Hospitality Management from The Ohio State University in 2007.
